Cremation FAQs

Clear answers to common questions

If you are arranging a cremation and not sure where to start, you are not alone. Most families have questions about cost, paperwork, collection, ashes, and whether they need to arrange a funeral service.
These FAQs are here to help you find practical answers.

Can you have a cremation without a funeral in New Zealand?

Yes. In New Zealand, you can have a cremation without a funeral service. This is called direct cremation.

Direct cremation means the cremation is arranged without a chapel service, viewing, formal gathering or funeral service attached. We collect the person who has died, care for them respectfully, help organise the required documentation, arrange the cremation, and return the ashes to you.

After that, you can decide what feels right. Some families hold a memorial later. Some gather privately. Others keep things very simple.
